Your Donation in Action

More moments. More life. That’s why Heart & Stroke leads the fight against heart disease and stroke. Powered by donors and volunteers, we invest in life-saving research, empower and support Canadians to take control of their health, and advocate to governments to invest in programs, public awareness campaigns and healthy public policies to create an environment where healthy choices are the easy choices. Our donors are a part of our mission to prevent disease, save lives and promote recovery.

Fighting for prevention:

Up to 80% of premature heart disease and stroke can be prevented. That’s why Heart & Stroke works with schools, communities and policy makers to promote healthier lifestyles for all. With your support, we’re taking on initiatives that range from working with Indigenous leaders to protect and enhance the health of their communities, to developing programs aimed to reduce the impact of high blood pressure, to guiding Canadians of all ages to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Research Highlight: Having a baby can raise your risk of heart disease. University of Alberta researcher Dr. Margie Davenport wants to reduce that risk. Read more.

Saving lives:

Heart disease and stroke take one Canadian life every seven minutes. This is unacceptable: we need to enable faster, better emergency response and treatment to save lives. With the generosity of our donors and volunteers, Heart & Stroke is fighting to save lives by launching our public awareness campaign about the FAST signs of stroke, delivering CPR training to more Canadians, and improving fast access to AEDs in public spaces, our donors and volunteers are joining us in saving more lives.

Research Highlight: The gold-standard treatment for the most common type of stroke must be administered in the first 4-1/2 hours after onset. But how do you know how long it’s been when a stroke has happened during sleep? Dr. Christian Beaulieu, University of Alberta, is closing in on a way to determine critical onset time Read more.

Transforming recovery:

An estimated 1.6 million Canadians are living with heart disease and stroke. We’re enhancing supports for survivors and their care partners. More and more people survive heart disease and stroke, so the need to support recovery has never been greater. New Heart & Stroke online forums provide a space where people with lived experience can connect, peer to peer, to share stories and tips and provide support for each other. Our comprehensive guides to recovery from stroke, heart disease and heart failure were developed in consultation with people with lived experience, and designed to support Canadians living with heart disease and stroke and their caregivers.

Research Highlight: There are 600,000 Canadians living with heart failure today; and 50,000 more are diagnosed every year. It’s a long-term chronic condition that gets worse over time. At the University of Calgary, Dr. Paul Fedak is developing a technique to help the heart heal itself after the muscle is damaged, for example after a heart attack. Read more.
