Up to 80% of premature heart disease and stroke can be prevented. That’s why Heart & Stroke works with schools, communities and policy makers to promote healthier lifestyles for all. With your support, we’re taking on initiatives that range from working with Indigenous leaders to protect and enhance the health of their communities, to developing programs aimed to reduce the impact of high blood pressure, to guiding Canadians of all ages to adopt healthier lifestyles.

An estimated 1.6 million Canadians are living with heart disease and stroke. We’re enhancing supports for survivors and their care partners. More and more people survive heart disease and stroke, so the need to support recovery has never been greater. New Heart & Stroke online forums provide a space where people with lived experience can connect, peer to peer, to share stories and tips and provide support for each other. Our comprehensive guides to recovery from stroke, heart disease and heart failure were developed in consultation with people with lived experience, and designed to support Canadians living with heart disease and stroke and their caregivers.
Research Highlight: There are 600,000 Canadians living with heart failure today; and 50,000 more are diagnosed every year. It’s a long-term chronic condition that gets worse over time. At the University of Calgary, Dr. Paul Fedak is developing a technique to help the heart heal itself after the muscle is damaged, for example after a heart attack. Read more.
