Why Jump

The support of teachers and families has made Jump Rope for Heart a school tradition in communities across Canada for nearly 40 years.

Though Jump and school look different this year, we are excited to support teachers and families doing health education in school or from home.

Our work to promote kids’ health and movement continues. It’s important for all of us to be active and practice other healthy habits to take care of ourselves and each other.

Students can learn fun ways to get active for heart health while raising awareness and support for Heart & Stroke.

Take a leap and be part of the movement!

Here’s how it works:

  • Join us and register online, either with your school or as a family as part of the “National Jump Team.”
  • Check your email to fundraise and learn more with new healthy activities for schools and families from HeartSmart Kids.
  • Celebrate together by watching our new digital Kick-Off Assembly and Event Day video. Stay tuned to jumpropeforheart.ca for more information!

FAQS

We’ve tried to answer many common questions below, but if you need additional help, please get in touch.

Parents

Due to the continued uncertainty in schools, we are empowering schools to decide if they want to host an in-person event at the school or a virtual one. Schools will have the flexibility to choose their own Event Day this year. It is important for schools to follow the provincial or territorial public health recommendations.

Student safety is a top priority. Schools should follow local heath guidelines as it relates to this year’s event. Ideas for activities that include physical distancing will be provided to schools to help ensure safety. Teachers can also host the Event Day virtually if they prefer or if it is recommended by their provincial or territorial government, public health or school board.

Yes, you can! Just simply join the “National Jump Team” and follow the steps in the Parent Checklist found on Families' Corner.

Please note: The National Jump Team Thank You prizes will be ordered June 18, 2021. If you have any questions, please email jumprope@heartandstroke.ca.

Jump Rope for Heart is not just about skipping. We encourage everyone to get moving any way that they can during their event. You can dance, play hopscotch, run, get out your hula hoop, or do anything else you can to move your body.

We appreciate your courage! Sharing your story inspires compassion, gratitude, hope, and generosity in others. Thank you.

Please share your family’s story with jumprope@heartandstroke.ca and start the subject line with "Our Family Story". Be sure to include your province, town and school in the body of your email so that we can connect you with a local Heart & Stroke representative.

Heart & Stroke and the Jump Rope for Heart program are only allowing online fundraising this year. That means we will not be providing pledge forms. We have moved to online only fundraising for the following reasons:

  • It is a safe way for children and families to collect donations. We want to keep families and teachers safe and are following guidance from public health authorities to help make sure people are physical distancing and limiting in-person contact. We've also heard concerns from parents and teachers alike about children carrying money on their person or going door-to-door in neighborhoods without parental involvement. It is also a secure way for children and families to collect donations from friends and family who live far away.
  • It is more efficient and advantageous for schools to fundraise online. When students collect their donations online, teachers and administrators spend less time collecting and counting pledge envelopes. This means that Thank You Prizes will be received sooner! It is also easier for schools to track progress towards their school goal online, as they can view online donations in real-time and download a complete fundraising report on the school’s total online impact and top online fundraisers.
  • It is an efficient and sustainable way for donors to give. When a donor gives online, they receive an electronic tax receipt immediately to their inbox for a seamless experience - no postage or transport is required and filing is paperless!
  • It helps Heart & Stroke save on administration, meaning more dollars can go directly to our cause. It also keeps everyone safe from exposure as cash does not have to be handled and counted.

We strongly encourage parents to support their children’s fundraising efforts by asking for support from family, friends, work colleagues and close neighbours online. For tips on how to get started online, please visit Families' Corner.

To join your child’s school and start fundraising online, please follow these instructions.

Further instructions are available here, under questions 3, 4 and 5 to help you set-up your child’s personal fundraising page, share their personal page link, and email their fundraising page to family, friends, colleagues and neighbours.

If you have questions or experience technical issues, please contact jumprope@heartandstroke.ca.

To start registering another child, you can log in to your first child’s account and use the ‘Register Another Child’ button in the ‘Command Centre’ section of their Participant Centre homepage. If you make a donation to your first child before registering another, you can also use the ‘Register Another Child’ link provided on the donation confirmation page.

Alternatively, you can search for their school here and read the tips below.

  • If you use the same email address to register another child, please be sure to use a different Username and First name.
  • Parents have enough to remember! Use the same passwords for all of your child’s accounts and keep their Username in an easy-to-find place like a desktop note or personal email draft.
  • We know it’s tempting (or maybe a reflex), but don’t save the password to your children’s accounts on your web browser. It can make it difficult to login and logout between children.
  • Always logout before leaving the website. This will make it easier to switch between multiple accounts.

To update your child’s personal page, please follow these instructions:

  1. Log in to your child’s Participant Centre
  2. Click on the ‘Update your fundraiser with a picture and tell us why you jump’ in the ‘Next Steps’ section
  3. Edit the Title and Body of your child’s personal page and upload a photo
  4. Click the ‘Save’ button at the bottom of the page to save your changes

Tip: Your child’s Participant Centre will time out after 20 minutes, so it might be best to write your updates in advance, then and paste them to your ‘Personal Page’ tab

To find your child’s personal page link, please follow these instructions:
  1. Log in to your child’s Participant Centre
  2. Locate the section ‘Share with family and friends’ at the top of your Participant Centre
  3. Click ‘Copy URL’ and paste it into the text, email or social post you’d like to share

To email your child’s personal page, please follow these instructions:

  1. Log in to your child’s Participant Centre
  2. Click on the ‘Email’ tab or use the ‘Send email to your friends and family’ button in the ‘Next Steps’ section
  3. Select one of the pre-written emails provided
  4. Customize the greeting with your supporter’s name and the salutation with your child’s name
  5. Use the ‘Add Contact’ button to enter your donor’s email address
  6. Review the email and click on the ‘Send’ button at the bottom of the page

In order for your Facebook Fundraiser to be recognized and credited towards your child’s fundraising efforts it needs to be set up a certain way. Click here for steps on how to successfully set up your fundraiser.

Please note that funds raised through Facebook Fundraisers cannot be counted towards Thank You Prizes due to the amount of time it takes for Heart & Stroke to receive the funds from Facebook

Donors may have donated to your child’s school or the general Jump Rope for Heart campaign rather than to your child’s personal page by mistake.

To ensure all donations are made to your child’s personal page, please share their personal page by following these instructions.

If a donation was already made and is not appearing on your child’s personal page, please provide the following information to jumprope@heartandstroke.ca to assign the donation to your child:

  1. Child’s First and Last Name
  2. Child’s School
  3. Donor First Name
  4. Donor Last Name
  5. Donation Amount

Once a donation has been made, we are not able to split the donation between fundraisers. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

Your support of Jump Rope for Heart helps make it possible for Heart & Stroke to achieve our mission of promoting health, saving lives and enhancing recovery. Together we are funding medical breakthroughs that tangibly improve Canadians’ heart and brain health. Check out our ‘Impact’ section here to learn more about where your donations go.

We offer online Thank You Prizes as a reward to students who reach their fundraising goals, a ‘thank you’ from Heart & Stroke for their efforts, and a form of encouragement to stay physically active long after their Jump event is over. Online gift cards are awarded to students who reach graduated fundraising levels and we hope that they are redeemed for fitness-themed products.

Some participating schools decide to opt-out of individual prizes for students. Please check with your school to see if they are offering online Thank You Prizes in their Jump Rope for Heart program.

Physical Thank You Prizes are typically delivered to each school after their Jump Event and teachers distribute the prizes to students. There is still a lot of uncertainty about this school year, and if students return to at-home learning and schools close we do not want to delay the delivery of their prizes. We are unable to ship prizes to each family’s home due to the cost of shipping, and we do not want students to wait until schools reopen to receive their Thank You Prize. Moving to an online only prize structure ensures that students will receive their prizes soon after their event is complete, regardless of whether they are in school or at home.

If your child’s school offers prizes, then you’ll receive an email to the address used to register your child 4-6 weeks after their Jump Event. This email will prompt you to visit the portal, enter your redemption code, and select your online gift card from the available options: Indigo, Amazon.ca, Toys “R” Us and Walmart.

Indigo, Walmart and Amazon.ca cards are electronic gift cards that are emailed within 24-48 hours of your selection. Toys “R” Us cards are plastic gift cards that are delivered via post approximately 7 to 10 business days from the time of your selection.

All of the online gift cards can be redeemed online or in-store.

All online thank you prizes for the National Jump Team will be ordered by June 18th. This allows all students on the National Jump Team to fundraise up until this date. If you have any questions, please email jumprope@heartandstroke.ca.

For all gift card inquiries, please contact jumprope@heartandstroke.ca

Teachers

Both! We know that this school year is different, and you may have some students coming into the school and others doing online learning, so we have adjusted Jump to be run in school or digitally. The choice is yours. We will be providing you with resources that will enable you to run Jump in-person, virtually, or both! These resources can be found on Teachers Corner. If you have any questions or experience technical issues when you register, please contact jumprope@heartandstroke.ca.

We have lots of fun things planned for Jump this year! Here are a few things to look forward to:

  • New online thank you prize structure!
  • New digital Kick-off and Event Day video to support your event!
  • New Thank You video to share with your students and community after your event!
  • Updated website to better support you, your students & their families!
  • Continuing our giveback program to thank YOU for your support and hard work!

New this year, we are launching Jump Rope for Heart in January 2021, instead of in September of 2020. This allows us to build a program that better supports your school and your needs. This means you will be able to run your event any time between January and June 2021.

The safety of your school as well as our employees is a top priority for us so we will not be having Heart & Stroke representatives visiting schools this year. We are working on creating some exciting virtual options to enable you to run a Kick-off Assembly and event day as an alternative to having a representative attend in person. Your Heart & Stroke representative will be available virtually to help you as you prepare for your Jump event day.

The safety of your students is a top priority for us. That is why you will be able to choose if you run your Event in person or virtually. To assist you with an in-person Event Day, we have created a list of suggested activities that you can do that allow you to stay physically distanced, but it will be up to each school to ensure they are following local public health and school board rules and policies.

Yes, we are! We will continue to offer the options of a 10% cheque back, HeartSmartPoints™ (Wintergreen gift cards), or donate back to Heart & Stroke. Please check out Teachers' Corner for more information.

No, we want to provide schools with the flexibility to run Jump whenever is convenient for them. We will be developing a virtual Event Day video that can be shared with you to air on the Event Day of your choosing.

Student safety is a top priority. Schools should follow the guidelines of their provincial or territorial government, local public health authorities and their school board for a safe event. Ideas for activities that include social distancing will be provided to schools to help ensure safety. Teachers can also host the Event Day virtually.

Protecting kids’ health is our top priority at Jump Rope for Heart! We have designed a program that allows for schools to run Jump in-person or virtually. We encourage schools to continue supporting Jump virtually if the school moves to 100 percent online learning, using the resources we provide and support from your Heart & Stroke Representative to run the event in a virtual setting.

You can sign-up your school for Jump here. Your local Heart & Stroke representative will contact you within 3 to 5 business days of submission.

If you have any questions or experience technical issues, please contact jumprope@heartandstroke.ca

Yes! Your Registration Kit will look a little different this year, but we will send one to you leading up to your Kick-off Assembly. Since we are moving to online only fundraising and Thank You Prizes this year, your Registration Kit will not include pledge forms or samples of online Thank You Prizes. But, you will still receive your t-shirts, paper hearts, and more!

We will only be accepting online funds this year. Please encourage your students and their families to fundraise online. We will be providing tools & resources to help you communicate with families about this change.

If you do receive cash or cheque donations, please reach out to your Heart & Stroke Representative or email jumprope@heartandstroke.ca for next steps.

Fundraising for Jump is optional, but encouraged! By fundraising for Jump Rope for Heart, you’re collecting donations that fund critical research that’s saving lives, preventing heart disease and stroke, and supporting survivors and their families.

In order to view your school’s online fundraising activities, you must first join your school as a Teacher Coordinator by following these instructions.

When you join your school as a Teacher Coordinator, your Heart & Stroke representative will receive a notification and grant you access to the school’s team fundraising page.

Once you have access to your school’s team page, you can view students’ online fundraising activity by following these instructions.

Donors

If the student you wish to support has created a personal fundraising page at jumpropeforheart.ca, you can simply search their full first and last name on the Donate page, under ‘Donate to a Student’. For privacy reasons, only school names will return in the search results. Student names will not appear. Select the school that the student you wish to support attends from the results. If two students at the same school have the same name, multiple records for the same school will return with different grade numbers.

Alternatively, you can ask the student for a link to their personal fundraising page and donate directly there.

To make an online donation to a school, simply search for the school you wish to support under ‘Donate to a School’ on the Donate page.

Yes we do! We accept all credit cards online, including American Express.

All online donors should receive an electronic copy of their tax receipt to the email address provided on the Donate page. Sometimes receipts are automatically filtered into Junk folders by your email provider, so be sure to check there too.

If you do not receive an electronic tax receipt for your online donation, please contact jumprope@heartandstroke.ca and provide your first and last name, email address, province, the first and last name of the student you wish to support, and their school.

Once a donation has been made, we are unable to split it between fundraisers.
